Steyer Still Wants Impeachment, Despite Disagreement Among Democrats

Despite calls from leadership within the Democratic Party to drop the impeachment rhetoric, billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer is still leading his movement to see President Donald Trump removed from office.

In fact, he’s reportedly shaming Democrats who aren’t riding on the impeachment bandwagon with him.

“I think there’s a question about what people are willing to say in public that they know is true,” Steyer reportedly said, referring to Democrats who he believes have cooled off on the impeachment rhetoric “because of political posturing before the midterms.”

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Steyer added, “Those who condemn Trump but do nothing to back their words with action are enabling the damage he is inflicting. Local Bay Area Congress members have repeatedly chosen to ignore their constituents’ voices by voting no on impeachment. The people deserve elected leaders who refuse to back down on our shared principles, and we will ensure their voices are heard.”

Steyer launched a Need to Impeach website and campaign on October 20, 2017 and has reportedly mailed his group’s guide to impeachment to 5,171 candidates across the country.

The New York Times reported on Sunday: “Polls show most voters are not supportive of impeachment at the moment.”

Democrats like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) believe impeachment talk from Steyer and his PAC is more of a distraction than anything else. Meanwhile, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) was one of the first Democrats to propose impeachment. In February, she said, “I say it is time to get ready for impeachment … I cannot wait and I’m counting on special counsel Mueller to connect the dots. … Democrats, I don’t care what the Republicans say. I say impeach 45!”

Steyer’s impeachment campaign has highlighted the deepening divide in the Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, Republicans have used this progressive message to motivate their own voter base to turn out for the upcoming 2018 midterm elections, namely “stop impeachment.”

While President Donald Trump is likely safe from impeachment with a Republican House and Senate, the same might not be true if Democrats become the majority again this year.
