Lubbock Mayor Apologizes for Dem Councilman's Reported Swipe at Abbott's Wife

Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson publicly apologized for a Democratic city councilman’s alleged claim that Attorney General Greg Abbott used his Latina wife of 32 years as a prop to woo voters.  Mayor Robertson emphatically apologized for Councilman Victor Hernandez’s remarks in a public letter reprinted by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Mayor Robertson’s Facebook page explained late Sunday night that despite his typical unwillingness to engage in ongoing partisan politics, his office must keep in good standing with whoever occupies the governor’s mansion.

General, this is Glen Robertson, Mayor of Lubbock, Texas. I wanted to contact you to apologize for the comments of a Lubbock City Council Member during your recent visit to Lubbock. This Council Member does not speak for the Council, the City of Lubbock or for the citizens of this great city. Our local government is non-partisan and I find it troubling that a Council Member would attempt to use his influence as an elected official to personally attack you. I am especially upset about the verbal attacks made against your wife. Please understand that the vast majority of Lubbock citizens do not share his views and definitely do not share his lack of civility or his unprofessional method of attacking those who do not agree with his politics. Thank you for your service to all Texas citizens and good luck in your upcoming election.

An additional local Republican official reacted to Hernandez’s behavior to media, “You know, it’s funny. I see it the other way. I see Victor Hernandez continually using race as a prop,” Lubbock County Republican Party Chairman Carl Tepper stated. “I think it’s sad, I think it’s uncalled for.”

According to the City of Lubbock, Hernandez is also an attorney with more than 20 years’ experience. A national legal directory states that the majority of his practice involves personal injury litigation.
