A drunken illegal immigrant fleeing a hit and run ran down a county sheriff who was on his way to work, officials in Denton County, Texas, said.

Officer Jim Terry was struck and seriously injured Sunday while riding his motorcycle to work at the Denton County Jail.

Police say the officer was struck by Oscar Salmeron, 42, who had only moments before struck another car and continued onward without stopping.

The suspect was later apprehended and charged with drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and a series of other charges involved with injuring a police officer.

Officer Terry has multiple broken bones and other serious injuries, according to his GoFundMe page. Terry, a two-year veteran of the force, needs several surgeries to recover.

The page reads:

Officer Jim Terry was hit by a drunk driver that was fleeing from another incident, while riding his motorcycle to work. Officer Terry has suffered extensive injuries and multiple broken bones. He will have multiple surgeries and countless hours of therapy/rehabilitation. He and his family will need assistance to get through this tough time. The money donated will be given to his family for medical expenses and family needs.

Along with the charges connected to the drunk driving, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has also placed Salmeron on hold for his illegal status.
