Tuesday, during the Arkansas senatorial debate between incumbent Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) and his Republican opponent Rep. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Pryor defined “middle class” as an income of up to $150,000 to $200,000 annually.
“Well, you know under the law, there’s a lot of different definitions of the middle class,” Pryor said. “But when I think of the middle class, I think in most of Arkansas, maybe that goes up to $150,000-$200,000. There’s different ways to judge.”
As Andrew Stiles of the Free Beacon pointed out, however, $283,000 in annual income would put you in the top 1 percent of income earners, where the household median income for that state is $40,112 according to a 2012 U.S. Census Bureau estimate.
