NC Vet Says He Was Fired for Lowering Flag on Memorial Day

Per a Fox 8 report, a North Carolina veteran claims he was fired from his job for lowering the American flag on Memorial Day.

Twenty-nine-year-old former Marine Allen Thornwell reportedly had his contract with Time Warner Cable in Charlotte, NC terminated Tuesday.

According to Thornwell, the company was not happy with him after he decided on his own to lower the flag to half-staff to honor others who have given their lives for the country.

“It was important for me to lower the flag to half-staff on Memorial Day in memory of all those service members who gave their lives – gave the ultimate sacrifice – in order for us to have the freedoms that we have today,” he said.

“I didn’t think of it as the property of Time Warner Cable,” Thornwell added. “It’s everybody’s flag.”

Time Warner Cable told The Charlotte Observer that Thornwell “was no longer under contract” with the company but would not comment any more on the situation.

Thornwell served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and was discharged in 2014.
