Nicki Minaj is doubling down on her public attack on pop star Miley Cyrus at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, by telling the controversial singer she must accept the struggles of the black community if she wants to continue to enjoy black culture.
The 32-year-old “Anaconda” rapper used her MTV VMA award speech in August to go after Cyrus, who had commented on her summertime Twitter feud with Taylor Swift.
“Back to this b—ch who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?” Minaj yelled on national television.
The public verbal assault was initiated by comments Cyrus made to The New York Times about Minaj, who claimed she was being scorned by the awards show for not being thin enough, after her video for “Anaconda” failed to bring in a nomination for Video of the Year.

Cyrus told the Times, “…I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it. And it’s not anger like, ‘Guys, I’m frustrated about some things that are a bigger issue.’ You made it about you. Not to sound like a bitch, but that’s like, ‘Eh, I didn’t get my VMA.’ If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself.
Two months later, Minaj is still going after Cyrus in The New York Times Magazine’s Culture issue.
“The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls,” Minaj says of Miley.
“You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad.”
She adds: “If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.”
Minaj was also asked during the interview if she thrives on drama.
“That’s disrespectful,” she responded. “Why would a grown-ass woman thrive off drama?”
The rapper eventually became combative, calling the mag’s Vanessa Grigoriadis “rude” and a “troublemaker,” according to E! News.
“Do not speak to me like I’m stupid or beneath you in any way,” she said, before abruptly ending the interview.
