Tory Brexiteer Andrew Bridgen MP has warned that Nigel Farage’s new Brexit Party will threaten the future of the Conservative Party if his colleagues fail to deliver Brexit.

MEP Nigel Farage announced that his Brexit Party has gained 35,000 supporters in the first 48 hours that the party had been registered, warning, “our politicians had better listen.”

Mr Bridgen has taken the threat Mr Farage’s new party poses his own seriously, telling talkRADIO Monday morning, “Of course, it’s a threat and I’m sure Nigel Farage wants it to be a threat.

“The Brexit party being formed is a Damocles sword hanging over the future of the Conservative Party and the Government.

“If we don’t deliver the Brexit that we promised the British people, quite rightly we’re going to be punished at the polls.”

During Mr Farage’s LBC radio show on Sunday, by which time the party has attracted some 15,000 supporters, the Brexiteer said the Brexit Party “intends to fight the European Parliament elections if there is a delay to Article 50,” saying, “there is huge appetite out there” for the movement.

“If Labour or the Conservatives think they can just kick this can down the road and not deliver Brexit on the 29th of March without consequences, they’ve got another thing coming,” he added.

The Leave Means Leave vice chairman gave his full support to the Brexit Party, which was officially recognised by the Electoral Commission on Friday, saying, “I have made it clear many times that I will not stand by and do nothing if the referendum result is betrayed, so should this election need to be contested, I will stand as a candidate for the Brexit Party and I will give it my all.”
