Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) will join Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) for a luncheon and fundraising effort next month to help him in his re-election bid in the Sunshine State.
A copy of the invitation for the November 3 luncheon reception in Jacksonville was obtained by the Sacramento Bee, which broke the news.
Harris will reportedly join Nelson on several fundraising events throughout Florida, which will also include Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.
Harris, seen as a rising start in the Democratic Party—which is actively searching for new leaders—recently helped Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) with five fundraisers in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Shaker Heights.
Florida Governor Rick Scott, a Republican, has not yet announced his candidacy for the 2018 Senate race against Nelson.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, a Florida Atlantic University (FAU) poll shows Nelson and Scott being so close that either man could win.
The poll, conducted by FAU’s Business and Economics Polling Initiative in August, found that Nelson is the preferred candidate by 42 percent of the registered voters, while Scott is the pick for 40 percent of registered voters.
Last month, during his visit to Florida in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Irma, President Donald Trump urged Scott to run for Senate. “I just, again, I have to say that—what do I know? But I hope this man right here, Rick Scott, runs for the Senate,” Trump said.
Harris’s help may be badly needed. Democrats could “fall short of the House majority and lose five Senate seats,” in 2018, according to analysis by FiveThirtyEight. “Even if Democrats were to win every single 2018 House and Senate race for seats representing places that Hillary Clinton won or that Trump won by less than 3 percentage points—a pretty good midterm by historical standards—they could still fall short of the House majority and lose five Senate seats,” FiveThirtyEight’s David Wasserman predicted in August.
