Dec. 2 (UPI) — Anne Hathaway plays a pop star on the precipice of a comeback in a trailer for Mother Mary released Tuesday by A24.
Michaela Coel also stars as a fashion designer and the singer’s former friend.
The trailer features clips of Hathaway as pop singer Mother Mary performing on stage interspersed with scenes reuniting with Coel’s Sam Anselm after 10 years apart.
“Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance,” a synopsis of the film reads.
Hathaway tells Coel she’s come to her for a dress.
“So, you’ve come crawling back to me,” Coel says.
“I didn’t know where else to go,” Hathaway responds.
Things turn dark — and a little bit spooky — in the trailer as a title displays across the frame: “This is not a ghost story.”
“You think there’s something inside of you?” Coel asks Hathaway. “Let’s cast her out together.
“There may only be one of us left standing when this is over.”
“I know,” Hathaway replies.
The two women appear to take part in a ritual with several other women around a table.
The film, from director David Lowery, also stars Hunter Schafer, FKA twigs, Jessica Brown Findlay, Kaia Gerber, Atheena Frizzell, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista and Sian Clifford.
The film is expect to hit theaters in spring 2026.
