NEW YORK, Dec. 23 (UPI) — Reese Witherspoon says her divorce from Ryan Phillippe led to her career slump.

The 38-year-old actress discussed her split from the 40-year-old actor on Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes. Witherspoon and Phillippe divorced in 2007, and the star went on to make a series of unsuccessful films in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

“That was a tough year that followed,” she admitted. “I spent a few years just trying to feel better. You can’t really be very creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs.”

“I was floundering career-wise because I wasn’t making things I was passionate about, I was just kind of working,” she said of flops such as Four Christmases (2008). “And it was really clear that audiences weren’t responding to anything that I was putting out there.”

Witherspoon and Phillippe have two children, 15-year-old Ava Elizabeth and 11-year-old Deacon Reese. The actress married talent agent Jim Toth in March 2011, and the couple have a two-year-old son, Tennessee James.

Witherspoon co-produced a critically successful David Fincher adaptation of Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl, and co-produced and will star in a Jean-Marc Vallée adaptation of Cheryl Strayed autobiography Wild. The latter earned the star a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
