Sept. 25 (UPI) — Actresses Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder were detained during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The New York Police Department said it detained 103 people Thursday who were participating in a sit-in on First Avenue, blocks away from the U.N. headquarters. Video captured from the scene showed police zip-tying Sarandon and Einbinder’s hands.
Also detained at the demonstration were comedian Caleb Hearon, Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning and New York Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier.
The demonstration was held to urge nations, including the United States, to stop offering military support to Israel for its operations in Gaza. Demonstrators wore shirts and carried signs with phrases including “End the genocide,” “Stop arming Israel” and “Fund people not bombs.”
As Netanyahu took to the podium Thursday, delegates from dozens of nations walked out of the room. Netanyahu then launched into criticisms of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Internet personality Hasan Piker and those who have voiced opposition to Israel’s military efforts in Gaza.
Einbender, star of HBO series Hacks, spoke about her support for the Palestinian people during an interview at Cannes earlier this year, noting that it could impact her career.
“The cost of not speaking is higher, you know?” Einbender said. “There is a greater toll in not speaking, and you just gotta have your priorities straight.”
