The parents of Aurora movie theater gunman James Holmes say their son “is not a monster” and does not deserve to die for his shooting rampage that cost 12 innocent people their lives.

Robert and Arlene Holmes believe their son should be able to plead “guilty by reason of insanity” and face treatment, instead of trial.

According to the Daily Mail, prosecutors view things differently and want Holmes to “face the death penalty in front of an open court.”

In addition to killing 12 people during a July 2012 showing of the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, Holmes stands accused of injuring up to seventy more. And while his parents admit that families of victims killed and wounded would like to see Holmes face death, they say he does not deserve to die because “he is a human being gripped by severe mental illness.”

Holmes’ parents believe a good option would be allowing their son to plead “guilty … in exchange for life in prison without parole.” They contend that would put him “in prison the rest of his life, but no one would have to relive those horrible events at a trial the media has permission to televise.”
