The Family Leader’s CEO Bob Vander Plaats spoke one on one with Breitbart News after he endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for president, saying Cruz has the resources and infrastructure to win the GOP nomination, unite conservatives, and select a Vice President with characteristics that buy into his vision and agenda for the country.

Senator Cruz has the real ability right now to unite conservatives from the liberty wing of the party, from the Republican grassroots wing, from the Evangelical pro-family wing, to the limited government wing, so I think he’s going to bring a lot of factors of the party together and I think he is Hillary Clinton’s, frankly, her worse nightmare of tying to become president because I think he’s very gifted at winning persuasive debate and arguments.

“The past two caucus winners I backed – Huckabee and Santorum – and I love both those guys, but after Iowa they just didn’t have the infrastructure to go deeper into the race, so eventually got defeated by McCain and by Romney,” Vander Plaats told Breitbart News about his belief that Cruz cannot only win Iowa, but also has the resources to clinch the GOP nomination.

I see the resources with Ted Cruz and the infrastructure that he has in the states like New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada and the SEC primary states and the resources he has at his dispotsal to continue to grow a campaign. I really believe he has a great shot at becoming the Republican nominee.

Vander Plaats said he believes Cruz would select a Vice Presidential candidate that shares his vision and wouldn’t select a moderate just to balance out the ticket.

“I think what he’ll look for is somebody that buys into his vision, into his agenda, and somebody who is capable of doing the office of presidency in case something – God forbid – were to happen to him,” Vander Plaats said, adding, “I don’t think Senator Cruz is going to say, ‘I just need to balance out this ticket with somebody who is moderate.’”

He believes Cruz will select “someone who can actually lead and be part of the team.”

Vander Plaats said the GOP has a great field of candidates, but that Cruz “has been consistent with his principles” and “able to show that he can build a campaign apparatus that will not only win in Iowa, but […] can win the nomination long term.”

Breitbart News asked what issue Vander Plaats believes is the most pressing during the 2016 election.

“Everybody would have to say national security is a very pressing issue,” he responded, referencing ISIS, Paris, and San Bernadino. “I think Americans want to know who’s in this country.”

He added that Cruz will be a firm leader on issues of national security and foreign policy.

Vander Plaats also referenced how the Supreme Court redefined marriage, saying, “You’ll need a leader there that knows how to deal with the courts,” referencing how in the past, Cruz clerked for the Supreme Court and has argued cases and won in front of the court. “He knows the Constitution exceptionally well.”
