A former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent tells Bloomberg it would be unusual for GOP frontrunner Donald Trump to be audited for 12 years.

“If the IRS examines your tax return and finds no issues they will not audit your return again for two years,” Alan Olsen said. “If returns are properly prepared, the IRS typically goes away.”

“For many years, I’ve been audited every year. Twelve years or something like that,” Trump stated during the debate.

During the GOP primary debate in Houston, Texas on Thursday, Trump said he is being audited, so he cannot release his tax returns. Former Republican nominee Mitt Romney suggested earlier in the week that there could be a “bombshell” in Trump’s tax returns.

Following the debate, Trump suggested he has been audited because he is a Christian.
