On Thursday, Chris Culliver said his comments about gay football players “were ugly” and was sorry if he “offended anyone.”
”Hopefully I learn and grow from this experience and this situation,” he said, insisting that he treats “everyone equal.”
Culliver also said he loves San Francisco.
San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh said he had a “conversation” with Culliver and did not believe there was any “malice in his heart.”
“He’s not an ugly person,” Harbaugh said.
On Wednesday, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver apologized for comments he made to a shock jock on a radio show about how gay football players would not be welcome in the locker room.“The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel,” Culliver said in a statement. ”It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.”
In an interview with shock jock Artie Lange, Culliver said, “No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah … can’t be … in the locker room man. Nah.”
As Breitbart Sports wrote, when asked if gay football players should keep their sexuality to themselves, Culliver said gay football players should “come out 10 years later after” retirement.
The 49ers also released a statement earlier saying the team rejected Culliver’s “comments that were made yesterday, and have addressed the matter with Chris.”
San Francisco plays Baltimore in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
