Apparently the NFL is as tone-deaf in Spanish, as it is in English.

Mexico was hit with an earthquake on Thursday, a massive, 8.2-magnitude event that did serious damage. According to the latest count, the quake has claimed at least 90 lives. Despite the deadly serious nature of the incident, the NFL Mexico Twitter account decided to use the event to have a little fun.

Translated from Spanish, the tweet read, “Those times Mexico City shakes with an earthquake because it can’t believe the Chiefs have won the #Kickoff2017 game.” The tweet was followed by not one, not two, but three emojis.

After deleting the tweet, the NFL Mexico account then issued an apology for the incident.

“NFL Mexico apologizes for yesterday’s unacceptable tweet, which does not represent the values of the league. We reiterate our solidarity with Mexico.”

According to Pro Football Talk, “The NFL is attempting to grow in popularity in Mexico, with the Raiders playing home games there this year and last year. The next game in Mexico features the Patriots and Raiders in Mexico City on November 19.”

The NFL Mexico Twitter account is not helping this effort.
