14th Amendment Anniversary: Historian Richard Brookhiser Explains Lincoln in ‘Founder’s Son’

On this day, in 1866, the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was finally certified by Secretary of State William H. Seward. The amendment guarantees that no state “shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”

On June 17, reports emerged that Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Roof obtained his gun “legally,” so calls for gun control have largely fallen on deaf ears. But a photo of Roof posing with a Confederate battle flag has managed to become the impetus for a cause célèbre to banish the Confederate battle flag from public view.

Brazilian Town Proudly Flies the Confederate Battle Flag

While the latest media-driven culture-war frenzy leaves America doubled over in agony about the Confederate battle flag, the path of tolerance and historical memory is much easier in the Brazilian town of Santa Barbara D’Oeste, where regular events bring together descendants of some ten thousand Confederates, seven generations removed, for what the BBC describes as “a sort of family reunion.”

Dylann Storm Roof Spoke of Starting Civil War, Used Synthetic Drugs

Dylann Storm Roof, 21, who slaughtered nine people at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday night, was an alleged drug user of the synthetic drug Suboxone, as well as Xanax, cocaine, LSD, and methamphetamine, according to police records. He also admitted to friends that he wanted to start a civil war months before his violent rampage.

US Supreme Court Hearing Texas Case Involving State Rejection of Confederate License Plates

The United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments Monday, March 23rd, in a case deciding whether the State of Texas acted unconstitutionally in disallowing the sale of a license plate displaying the Confederate Flag. The Texas Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) argue that the free speech rights of their members have been violated by the rejection of their 2009 application for the license plate. The license plate bears the Confederate flag and the words “Sons of Confederate Veterans 1896.”

Daily Beast: Robert E. Lee Would Not Want Confederate Battle Flags At WLU
