Dem. Leader: McCarthy Exit a ‘Sign That Republicans Are Unfit To Lead’

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) decision to drop out of the speakership race shows “deep divisions and dysfunction” among House Republicans, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) argued Thursday. “As a result of their divisions and their efforts to disrupt Congress’s work, we’ve experienced a government shutdown, a near-default on our debt, and too many missed opportunities to grow our economy and support job creation,” Hoyer said in a statement.

Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Daniel Webster, or Rep. Jason Chaffetz – they should support for Speaker.

Chaos in Congress: House of Representatives a Mess as Boehner Charts Pathway to His Resignation

At first, it seemed as if his heir apparent House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy would easily ascend into the speakership and that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise would easily replace McCarthy, and Chief Deputy Whip Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) would easily ascend into the Whip’s role. Now, one of that seems easy or likely as the growing conservative wing of the conference—emboldened by Boehner’s resignation—is demanding a series of structural reforms to the way business in done in Congress rather than just a reshuffling of the deck in leadership post-Boehner.

Donald Trump on Kevin McCarthy: Need Someone ‘Tougher’ as Speaker

“I would like to see someone that’s very tough and that can negotiate with the Democrats, and I don’t know that he’s that person,” Donald Trump said about possible Speaker Kevin McCarthy. “We need somebody that’s a very, very tough, smart, cunning person. I don’t know that that’s him, and obviously this statement hurt him pretty badly in the eyes of some, unfortunately.”

Progressive Wants McCarthy To Betray His Base, Replay Macbeth

“What I am recommending is that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) go to McCarthy and pledge to supply the requisite Democratic votes for him to become Speaker if he doesn’t have the required Republican votes,” says an op-ed published in TheHill.com, authored by D.C. political activist Mark Plotkin.
