Facebook users are reporting that the social media platform has started making comments from their account for them.
A Twitter user named Steph Haberman pointed out that Facebook installed an autoresponder feature for some users. The feature is currently only implemented on live video posts, such as one that Haberman had posted in the aftermath of the Chicago Hospital shooting.
Reports suggest that Facebook was planning to implement the autoresponder feature on all comments. With the new featured installed, users wouldn’t even have to think before typing a comment.
“This wins for most dystopian thing I’ve seen all day (and I live in the smoke-drenched Bay Area where everyone is wearing masks, so that’s saying a lot)” one user tweeted about the new feature.
In response to the backlash, Facebook temporarily disabled the feature. They explained in a comment that the feature was only rolled out to certain users as limited test feature. It is unclear at this time if Facebook plans to roll the feature back out in the future.
This year has been plagued with issues for the social media giant. Earlier this year, Facebook took out a full-page ad in several major newspapers to apologize for the privacy violations that led to the use of their data by third-party companies that were looking to influence the 2016 presidential election.
