On Monday, at a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing with new acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel, Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R-FL) asked Werfel, “Do you feel that the IRS has betrayed the American people?” Werfel answered, “I do…the trust has been violated.”
Werfel said that in order to restore trust, facts had to be made subject to public scrutiny and people had to be held accountable for the breakdowns. “We have to fix the problem,” Werfel said. He added, “this type of problem…it shows there are other issues throughout the IRS, control issues, management oversight issues, that we need to look at.”
Crenshaw asked if Werfel was willing to cooperate fully with Congress. Werfel again answered in the affirmative. “Absolutely, you have my commitment for full cooperation,” he said.
