Hollywood Playbook: Friday's Top 5 News Items

Forgiving Mel Gibson is a little different than tolerating his presence in the pressure-cooker of the working environment that is film production. Putting the racism aside (and not lightly), I'd pump gas before I'd risk having anything to do with a screamer, and Gibson appears to be something of a screamer. Mar 14, 2014 8:27 AM PT

'True Detective' Review: Dumb Politics, Great Characters

HBO On Demand is still streaming the full first season of "True Detective," which is made up of eight one-hour episodes that concluded Sunday. I finished it last night and wasn't terribly impressed. The central murder mystery involving an occult serial killer is muddled and illogical and the anti-Christian sucker punches actually hurt the overall story. The central relationship between the show's two stars -- Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey -- did, though, make the show worth watching. Mar 14, 2014 6:03 AM PT

Dumb and Dumber Jeff Daniels Rips Marlon Brando

There are bushel baskets full of terrible things you could say about Marlon Brando that would all be true. This insult from actor Jeff Daniels, however, is not one of them: Mar 13, 2014 12:52 PM PT

Robert Duvall Blasts 'The Butler': 'Atrocities in South Committed By Democrats'

In an interview with the Daily Beast, living legend and Oscar-winner Robert Duvall blasted the Civil Rights film "The Butler" as "very inaccurate." The 83 year-old star added, "JFK had one of the worst Civil Rights voting records," and "All the atrocities in the South were committed by the Democratic Party." Mar 13, 2014 10:32 AM PT

Chelsea Handler to Piers Morgan: 'You're a Terrible Interviewer'

During her appearance this week on CNN's soon-to-be-canceled "Piers Morgan Live" Chelsea Handler tore into host Piers Morgan for being a terrible interviewer. It all started when Morgan ignored her during a commercial break to goof off on Twitter. Mar 13, 2014 8:50 AM PT

Disney's 'Frozen' Is Not Homosexual Propaganda

I don't pretend to be very good at much of anything but one thing I am good at is spotting a political agenda in a piece of entertainment from a hundred yards. Last night I screened "Frozen" and there was … nothing. My antennae was up and spinning but it just kept spinning. Nothing stopped it. "Frozen" is only "gay" in the original sense of the word: it makes you smile. Mar 13, 2014 5:46 AM PT

Lance Bass Visits Obama, Tweets Wrong ObamaCare Website

Lance Bass, the one-time member of the one-time popular boy band NSYNC, used his verified Twitter account to announce to his 371,000 followers that he was visiting with President Obama today at the White House to talk about ObamaCare. Benjamin Kunkel: The Lena Dunham of Literature

The urban provincials at New York Magazine have found their new Lena Dunham, a novelist named Benjamin Kunkel who they are primping to be the next big thing no one has ever heard of. Way back in 2005, Kunkel wrote a novel no one heard of called "Indecision." This was after he co-founded a New York-based literary journal no one heard of. Mar 12, 2014 11:18 AM PT

Lena Dunham May Quit Acting

Lena Dunham, star of the HBO ratings catastrophe "Girls" and toast of the urban provincial elites who run the media, told Glamour that she might quit acting. Apparently, this has nothing to do with the fact that she is ratings poison but rather is an altruistic decision on her part to give other women roles. Mar 12, 2014 9:59 AM PT

Hollywood Playbook: Wednesday's Top 5 News Items

Obama's Funny or Die appearance was a dud, though. The Weekly Standard's John McCormack was on a conference call with the Department of Health and Human Services and they admitted that only 19,000 people clicked over to the ObamaCare website after watching the Funny or Die video. Millions watched that video. Mar 12, 2014 6:38 AM PT

'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Bluray Review

Jennifer Lawrence is the best thing to happen to movies since Denzel Washington. The girl is pure movie star: appealing, accessible, sexy, smart, and an incredibly talented actress. She is the whole show in "Catching Fire," the incredibly popular sequel to the just as popular "Hunger Games." The commitment the 23 year-old Oscar winner gives to the role of our heroine Katniss Everdeen sells what could have otherwise come off as a cheesy dystopian extravaganza where everyone runs around for an hour in spandex. Hollywood Playbook: Tuesday's Top 5 News Items

So, if I'm reading this correctly, we know that after torturing the Scorpio Killer Callahan is "broken" because he believes he can fly and the film itself turns into a "fantasy" because the time cut showing Callahan perched on the bridge isn't really a time cut but a real-time cut that is meant to tell the viewer that Callahan simply materialized on this bridge out of thin air… Mar 11, 2014 9:21 AM PT
