Time Warner Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes was blasted for CNN's left-wing bias at Time Warner's annual shareholders meeting Friday. Box Office: Sequels Rule or Why Hollywood Does Nothing Original

Sequels, reboots, remakes and sequels of rebooted remakes. We all hate them. We all complain about them. Very few conversations about Hollywood don't contain that complaint. But just like you and I, the powers-that-be in Hollywood look at the box office grosses and see that a well-reviewed original piece of work like Tom Cruise's "Edge of Tomorrow" is tanking while sequels, reboots, and remakes work as their own cash machine. Hollywood Playbook: Friday's Top 5 News Items

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is under-performing in a big way. This is obvious when you wake up to the fact that, like most sequels, it was expected to soar over the first. Even without accounting for inflation, "Amazing 2" is lagging behind the Raimi trilogy, which didn't enjoy the boost that comes from 3D and Imax ticketing. And movies have gotten a lot more expensive to produce and promote since the Raimi days. Jun 13, 2014 12:03 PM PT

'22 Jump Street' Review: One Long, Funny but Forgettable Gay Joke

Just before seeing "22 Jump Street" last night, I grabbed the opportunity to see 2012's "21 Jump Street," so I can say that the hype about the sequel being better than the original is true. The second hour of "21" was nowhere near as good as the first. The sequel avoids that problem by giving Ice Cube's "Angry Black Police Captain" Dickson more to do. His second act scenes are the best in a highly self-aware comedy that is also one long gay joke. Jun 13, 2014 6:55 AM PT

Nikki Finke Returns: 'I Want to Be Your Cruel and Quirky Alternative'

Regardless of her intentions, attitude, or past, Finke knows she will rise (again) or fall (again) based solely on her ability to recreate what made Deadline the almost-slayer of the Iconic Variety and Hollywood Reporter: scoops -- scoops first, fast, and foremost. Jun 12, 2014 11:45 AM PT

Two extremely well reviewed sequels hit nearly every theatre in America Friday and both are expected to clear $50 million by Monday. WSJ: Dave Brat Fears Hitler Will Rise Again

Former Politico reporter Reid Epstein just jumped to the Wall Street Journal but seems to have taken the worst of Politico's instincts with him. In an uncharacteristically bizarre WSJ piece, Epstein attempts to manufacture from thin air a political controversy for Republican Dave Brat, the GOP House candidate who shook up the media and GOP Establishment bubble Tuesday night with his stunning defeat of Eric Cantor, the House Majority Leader. Hollywood Playbook: Wednesday's Top 5 News Items

I didn’t change, EW did. After the 2000 presidential election, the publication went from political to hyper-partisan. The Bush Derangement Syndrome was deep, bitter, and exhausting. My memory isn't good enough to list specifics, but after 9/11 and into the run up of the Iraq War, I can't count how many times I was attacked for who I was and what I believed in. Barack Obama's Twitter Account Blows Date of First Moonwalk By 6 Years

Pearl Harbor, D-Day, the Kennedy assassination, the first moonwalk, and September 11, 2001. These are dates any American with even a rudimentary understanding of American history knows. You can graduate from a public school and still know those dates. Unfortunately, the Google-challenged geniuses President Obama put in charge of his Twitter account (and identity-politics' propaganda) do not know at least one of these dates.
