Prosecutor: Man Lied to Beat Background Check, Bought Gun Used in Mass Shooting

On October 24, Breitbart News reported that 15-year-old Jaylen Fryberg shot four fellow students at Marysville-Pilchuck High School with a handgun — then turned the weapon on himself, taking his own life. On October 27, Breitbart News fought back against those pushing more gun control in the wake of the shooting by explaining that Fryberg got the handgun from his father, who passed a background check to purchase it.

Now prosecutors have revealed that Jaylen’s father, Raymond Lee Fryberg, only passed a background check because he lied on the forms. In reality, he was barred from gun possession due to a 2002 “permanent protection order” issued against him.

According to the KOMO News, the elder Fryberg was arrested on March 31 on charges that he “illegally purchased the firearm used in the mass shooting.”

Fryberg will appear in U.S. District Court in Seattle on April 5.

It is interesting to note that Washington state’s new universal background check law passed by a small margin on November 4 — just under two weeks after the Marysville shooting — with supporters pledging that more background checks would reduce gun crime.

Fryberg’s example proves again that background checks are impotent against determined criminals or those determined to beat the system.

All Fryberg had to do to get a gun was lie when asked questions for ATF forms, and the prosecutor in this case says that is exactly what he did.
