ST. AMANT, Louisiana — GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump sent a message to Louisiana flood victims in the area who were devastated by flooding as late as Sunday.
Trump posted to his Facebook page a photo depicting debris in the St. Amant region of the state, which sits inside Ascension Parish, with a sign that reads “St. Amant [Hearts] Trump!”
In response, Trump wrote “I love you St. Amant, Louisiana! Stay strong- you will re-build & America is with you!”
Trump recently visited regions of the state, including Ascension Parish, which have been destroyed by days of storms and flooding, telling the people of Louisiana “We are one nation. When one state hurts, we all hurt. And we must all work together to lift each other up.”
“I hope everyone in Louisiana knows that our country is praying for them and standing with them to help them in these difficult hours,” Trump said. “They are very, very difficult.”
In return, residents greeted Trump, where he donated a truck-load of supplies and necessities to flood victims, with shouts of praise and admiration for thus far being the only national political figure to visit the region.
“We knew you’d be here Mr. Trump,” said a resident in Central, Louisiana to Trump. “We knew you’d be here for us!”
“We lost everything and we knew you would come,” another woman said to Trump. “This makes it all worthwhile.”
“Thank you Mr. Trump,” a supporter shouted repeatedly.
Trump’s ended his visit with a tour to Ascension Parish, one of the most devastated regions in the state, as Breitbart Texas reported.
Almost a third of all homes in the area flooded after the levee system failed to keep water out. Control systems proved unreliable, with the Laurel Ridge Levee toppled.
More than 60,000 homes in the state have been destroyed by floodwaters.
