PIEDRAS, NEGRAS, Coahuila — A team of gunmen killed a newly reinstated Coahuila state police commander after being tied to an embezzlement scheme. The murder occurred outside a local gym in Saltillo.

Shortly before the murder, Police Commander Sergio “Tobogan” Tobias Salas was standing outside a gym that he owned, Sports Gym. As Tobias spoke with another man, a white automobile pulled up and a lone gunman began firing a handgun at him, information provided to Breitbart Texas by Coahuila state authorities revealed.

The victim was shot four times striking him in the head and neck area; he collapsed next to a motorcycle. The shooting killed him almost instantly.

Tobias had been a career lawman in Coahuila serving in multiple agencies, most recently in the now extinct Fiscalia General de Coahuila, or another name for the State Prosecutor’s Office. In 2012 Tobias was removed from his post and detained in connection with the 2011 Megadeuda; a massive embezzlement scheme. The lawman was recently released from custody and was reinstated after federal authorities exonerated him.

Known as the Megadeuda or MegaDebt, during the term of former governor Humberto Moreira, various state officials ransacked the state coffers through various embezzlement schemes. The move left the state heavily indebted leading Standard & Poor’s to drop the state’s credit rating six measures.

While various politicians were prosecuted in the U.S. on money laundering charges in connection with the MegaDebt, in Mexico, Moreira was “cleared” by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office. Humberto Moreira is the same Mexican governor who had been publicly linked to Los Zetasc Cartel. While the former governor has not been charged in Mexico, court testimony in U.S. federal cases revealed that Zetas would pay him and his staffers protection money.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.M. Martinez” from Piedras Negras, Coahuila.
