Emergency room workers at hospitals in the Swedish city of Malmö have said that escalating gang violence has caused their work environment to become so dangerous that they feel their lives are at risk.
A security officer who works in an emergency room in the heavily migrant populated southern Swedish city said the work environment had become increasingly dangerous for him and others. “We have been attacked by knives and we have seen people with guns. We put our lives at risk,” he told Swedish broadcaster SVT.
Last week, local government officials and hospital executives met to discuss the issue of rising violence but decided that it really was not a big enough problem to take action on.
“It was probably one of the most laughable things we’ve seen in a long time,” said a security guard who has been working at a Malmö hospital emergency room for several years.
“It’s one of the worst places in Malmö together with the central station and the people’s park,” he said and added that security guards were forced to intervene in dangerous situations involving knives or guns at least two to three times per week.
Several guards also mentioned that victims of shootings would often be dumped outside the hospital doors because those dropping them off did not want to be caught on CCTV cameras. “The care staff should not go out and pick them up. You still want to be human so you run out and help,” one guard said.
“It’s just a matter of time before there’s a shotgun in the waiting room,” another guard said and all noted that the security situation had deteriorated in recent years.

Violence in Malmö, particularly gun crime and hand grenade attacks, has been escalating in the no-go zone in recent years. The government swore to tackle the issue earlier this year after the shooting death of a 16-year-old but results have been inconclusive at best.
Police have said the situation in Malmö has become “unacceptable” and have claimed that the number of hand grenade attacks has risen by as much as 550 per cent in the last three years alone.
Ambulance staff are not the only ones in danger from criminal gangs. Last week, firefighters were forced to let a building burn to the ground after they were attacked with bottles as they attempted to put out the blaze which authorities believe was an act of arson.
The city of Malmö is one of the most migrant dense cities in all of Sweden and recent statistics showed that the city’s population growth was completely driven by migration.
