Assemblywomen Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) and Ling-Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) have sponsored a bill that abolishes the tax on tampons and pads as part of the pursuit of “gender equity.”

The Sacramento Bee reports that “the Assembly on Tuesday unanimously approved Assembly Bill 1561,” just as the Senate had unanimously done last week. The measure now goes to Governor Jerry Brown (D) and will also end the tax on “menstrual cups and menstrual sponges” if he signs it into law.

Garcia said, “Fundamentally this is about gender equity and leveling the playing field. Every month, for 40 years of our lives, we are taxed for being born women.”

California’s effort to abolish the “tampon tax” follows efforts in New York and other states, which are trying to do the same.
