Jan. 6 (UPI) — The Dallas Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, a league source told UPI on Tuesday.

Eberflus’ defense allowed the most points and third-most yards in the NFL this season. It ranked last against the pass and 23rd against the run. The Cowboys also allowed the second-most passing touchdowns and second most rushing scores.

Eberflus, who was fired from his role as head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2024, was hired last January to replace Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer, who initially held the job from 2000 through 2006, reassumed the position for just one season. He replaced Dan Quinn, who served as Cowboys defensive coordinator from 2021 through 2023 before leaving to coach the Washington Commanders.

The Cowboys’ defense allowed the second-most points and fifth-most yards in 2024. It allowed the fifth-fewest points and yards in 2023, Quinn’s final season.
