Menendez Falsely Claims Club for Growth Support

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) made a false statement on the Senate floor Tuesday in an effort to push the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill, Breitbart News has learned.

In what appears to have been a push by Menendez to claim there is bipartisan support among various advocacy groups in Washington, he said the Club For Growth was among the groups supporting the bill.

“As a matter of fact, part of the compromise here is that Labor didn’t get everything it wanted,” Menendez said. “Neither did the U.S. Chamber of Commerce but they both agreed and were standing behind us when we announced this legislation, and saying this is good for America. And so Big Business and the AFL-CIO, the United Farm Workers with the Big Ag[riculture] Growers in this country, the most progressive pro-immigrant groups and Grover Norquist and the Club For Growth all saying this legislation is important and necessary for America.”

The problem with Menendez’s statement about the Club For Growth is that it is not true.

The Club For Growth has not taken a stance on this bill and will not. “The Club for Growth does not take a position on immigration policy,” Club For Growth spokesman Barney Keller told Breitbart News.

Update: When offered the opportunity to correct the record and apologize for the false statement, Menendez’s spokeswoman Patricia Enright told Breitbart News: “Um… No.”
