The attacker who allegedly wounded three people at the Carmike Hickory 8 Cinema in Antioch, Tennessee, theater on August 5 was armed with a hatchet, peppery spray, an airsoft gun, and a suspicious package which turned out to be a “hoax device.”
Police identified the attacker as 29-year-old Vincente Montano. They said the attack began about 1:13 pm and Montano was dead a few minutes past 2 pm.
The earliest reports indicated that Montano was allegedly armed with a real gun, but that no one had been shot. The only injuries were to two women–17 and 53 years old–both of whom had been sprayed with pepper spray, and a 58-year-old man who suffered a hatchet wound to the shoulder.
The first police officer who confronted Montano backed away upon allegedly seeing him raise a gun. Metro Police Chief said the officer “saw a gun come up, (and) he saw a trigger about to be pulled.”
When SWAT arrived Montano allegedy “came out them in a threatening manner” also and he was killed.
According to The Tennessean, Montano had been “committed for mental health care a total of four times.” His brother said he “was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2006,” and his mother told police her son “had a hard time taking care of himself.”
Montano’s attack comes nearly two weeks after John Russell Houser allegedly attacked patrons in Grand Theatre in Lafayette, Louisiana, leading to renewed calls to change the way we deal with mentally ill persons.
