Tiger Wins for Eighth Time at Torrey Pines

Tiger Wins for Eighth Time at Torrey Pines

Sporting his signature red shirt that he wears in the “final round” of golf tournaments, Tiger Woods opened the 2013 PGA Tour season with a resounding four-shot win at the Farmers Insurance Open tournament at Torrey Pines on Monday. He shot even par in the final round and was at -14 for the tournament.

This was the seventh time Woods has won this tournament and the eighth time he has won at Torrey Pines.

Woods has won the Farmers Insurance Open six previous times and, according to ESPN, “in 5 of those years he went on to win at least one major tournament.” Woods has never won the Masters when he has not won a tournament preceding it.

Woods now has 75 victories on the PGA Tour. He is seven wins shy of tying Sam Snead’s record of 82 wins. Jack Nicklaus won 73 times.

The tournament concluded on Monday because play was suspended on Saturday due to rain. On Sunday, Woods did not wear his signature red t-shirt because he knew the tournament would not conclude on Sunday. Because Woods was leading going into the final round, CBS–in a sign of how much of ratings draw Woods is–reportedly asked PGA Tour officials to delay the start of play on Monday so the network could telecast the conclusion of the tournament’s final holes on the east coast. At 5 p.m EST, many CBS affiliates aired the golf tournament.

The Masters, which is held in Augusta, GA in April, is golf’s first major. Woods has won 14 majors and has not won one since his gutsy and dramatic 2008 U.S. Open victory at Torrey Pines. That win was before the infamous scandal with his many mistresses that altered his life–and golf game. Woods is chasing Nicklaus’s record of 18 majors.
