Sandy Hook Students to Sing at Super Bowl

According to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, a group of 26 students from the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut will perform “America the Beautiful” during the Super Bowl pregame show on Sunday.

The league is flying the students and their families to New Orleans at the end of the week. Their performance will be broadcast live on CBS prior to the performance of the National Anthem.

The NFL has demonstrated its support of the Newtown community through its use of “S.H.E.S.” (Sandy Hook Elementary School) stickers on players’ helmets, moments of silence prior to games, personal visits by players to the families, and charitable donations for relief causes.

The New York Giants hosted Newtown students and their families during pregame introductions prior to their win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

A group of Sandy Hook students also recorded a version of “Over the Rainbow” with pop singer Ingrid Michaelson, with proceeds from the sale of the recording directed to the Newtown Youth Academy and the United Way of Western Connecticut. The song was performed a couple of weeks ago on ABC’s Good Morning America and was made available for sale on Amazon and iTunes.
