Chris Johnson of the Cleveland Indians missed Sunday’s game because of playing Frodo to a small version of Shelob.

Johnson had to visit the hospital on Sunday because of a spider bite on his left index finger which catalyzed a reaction so severe that he could not bend his finger. He told MLB.com, “I woke up [Saturday] morning with that little pimple-looking bite. And they were like, ‘Yeah, you got bit by something.’ We put some stuff on it and it wasn’t swollen. I woke up this morning and it was swollen and oozing and red. It was gross.”

Manager Terry Francona simply said, “He got bit by a spider or something.”

Since the Indians acquired him from the Atlanta Braves on August 7, Johnson has batted .429 in six games with three doubles and three runs scored.

Johnson expressed hope that the treatment and antibiotics he received at the hospital would enable him to play as the Indians travel to Minnesota, Boston, New York, and Chicago.

Johnson broke in with the Astros in 2009, was traded mid-season 2012 to the Diamondbacks, then joined the Braves in 2013. He boasts a career batting average of .281.
