The National Hurricane Center (NHC) released another update on Hurricane Dorian, which has been downgraded to a Category 4 storm but continues to pose a major risk – packing life-threatening flash floods and hurricane-force winds – to the coasts of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled due to Hurricane Dorian’s looming threat to the U.S. east coast, USA Today reports.

An eight-year-old boy is the first reported first death from Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, according to two news sources on the island. 

Hurricane Dorian smashed parts of the Bahamas overnight with devastating 165 mph maximum sustained winds — down from 185 mph earlier — leaving a path of destruction in its wake, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Hurricane Dorian became a major hurricane on Friday, reaching Category 3 status, and forecasters say the storm will pack a three-pronged punch: high winds, storm surge, and severe flooding.

Dorian has been upgraded to hurricane status and could reach Category 3 when it reaches the U.S., according to the National Hurricane Center.
