Firefighters have wrapped the base of the giant sequoia tree known as “General Sherman” in a foil-like material to protect it from an ongoing wildfire in the Sequoia National Forest, which was triggered recently by lightning and drought conditions.

Firefighters appear to have saved Lake Tahoe communities from the fast-moving Caldor Fire, thanks to a new tactic of clearing firebreaks further away from the advancing blaze, and a change in weather that eased the hot, windy conditions.

The fast-moving Caldor Fire surpassed 200,000 acres on Wednesday, as weary firefighters hoped that changes forecast for regional weather might bring a respite from a blaze that continues to threaten communities in the Lake Tahoe basin.
