The streets of San Francisco are used to weird smells. However, on Wednesday morning, a mysterious rotten-egg and sulfur-like odor that baffled city and federal agencies and prompted dozens of phone calls of complaint.

Artists Call for End to Oakland Evictions

Three Bay Area residents say they have collected over 1,000 signatures from local artists and have penned a letter calling on Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf to stop landlords from evicting residents of warehouses similar to the “Ghost Ship” where 36 people perished in a deadly blaze earlier this month.

Burnt Ramen: Richmond Artists Protest Evictions

Over 100 supporters of Richmond’s legendary underground punk venue Burnt Ramen attended a City Council meeting on Tuesday night and protested outside against the closure of their “safe space,” in what they described as a “witch hunt” by authorities following a deadly fire on Dec. 2 that claimed 36 lives in an Oakland warehouse just 12 miles away.

Richmond Times-Dispatch: Steve Bannon Discusses His Richmond Roots and Condemning Racism

Graham Moomaw of the Richmond Times-Dispatch interviews Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s new chief strategist and a self-described “son of Richmond.” Bannon, whose close-knit Irish Catholic family lived in a racially diverse working class neighborhood, describes the “very strong imprint” Richmond’s North Side had on him and on his support for America’s inner cities. “I’m a huge advocate of the inner cities and the vibrancy of the city. I think Richmond’s an example of that,” Bannon tells Moomaw.

Mayor Blames Donald Trump for Inciting Hate Crime

On Wednesday, a Contra Costa County judge refused to reduce bail for a Richmond man who is facing hate crime charges and who the media have described as a “Donald Trump supporter” on the basis of his Facebook posts–even though he also admired Hillary Clinton.
