Senate Republicans have agreed to a deal that strips an amendment protecting religious freedom for faith-based organizations from a defense spending bill, making the measure more favorable to signature by outgoing President Barack Obama.

The House’s version of the redo, known as the Student Success Act (H.R. 5), was pulled from the House floor by GOP leadership in late February after it was determined the measure lacked sufficient support. Grassroots parents’ groups – many that have been fighting against the Common Core standards in their states – voiced their concerns that the Student Success Act still required excessive federal intrusion into the right of states to set their own education policies.

The Republican-dominated Senate has allowed Loretta Lynch to be confirmed as the next U.S. Attorney General, 56-43. Roll Call now says the GOP will suffer with “scars from the long, tortured confirmation process of the first African-American woman nominated to fill the post.”

The Left appears increasingly flustered over events in the Middle East, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party’s declaration of victory in Tuesday’s elections isn’t likely to help matters much.
