NBC News: 'Quite Obvious' Court Not Ready to Impose Same-Sex Marriage On Country

NBC’s Pete Williams watched Tuesday’s oral arguments and seems pretty sure the Supremes are not going to impost same-sex marriage on the rest of the country:

In a historic oral argument on a challenge to state laws limiting marriage to heterosexual couples, the Supreme Court indicated Tuesday that it might not strike down such laws. After the oral argument, Pete Williams of NBC News reported that it seemed “quite obvious” that the court is not prepared to issue a sweeping ruling declaring that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry.

It’s almost impossible to imagine the civic chaos that would ensue should all fifty states suddenly be told that they are required to marry same-sex couples.

The ramifications on our religious institutions would be outright harrowing. I’m of the opinion this is where things are headed eventually. But better a more manageable slow-motion train wreck than a bullet train.

This possibility, however, should not be ruled out just because of what we are hearing from left-wing media analysts. It is human nature in these situations to come away from these proceedings feeling negative after watching the Justices attack your argument. The media desperately wants to win this and their pessimism today should be viewed through that prism.

Ultimately, no one knows what’s in the mind of the Justices; no one would’ve guessed it would be Roberts imposing ObamaCare on the country.

Tomorrow the court will hear arguments on the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
