“J0hn Carter,” “Jupiter Ascending,” “Speed Racer,” Cowboys and Aliens,” “The Wolfman,” and … “Tomorrowland”?
Unless something supernatural happens in Brazil and Japan, the only two territories where director Brad Bird’s left-wing “Tomorrowland” has yet to open, Disney’s Global Warming screed starring George Clooney is going to go down as one of the biggest box office flops in Hollywood history.
“Tomorrowland’s” production and advertising budget totals something close to a quarter-billion dollars. The rule of thumb is that after theater-owners take their share, in order for a film to merely break even, it must at least gross twice its total budget. The breakeven point for “Tomorrowland” is somewhere between $450 and $500 million.
Thus far, according to Box Office Mojo, “Tomorrowland” has already made its play here in North America and 88% of available countries overseas. The result is a catastrophic $133 million worldwide gross ($63 million domestic; $70 million foreign), with only Japan and Brazil left to save the day.
When all is said and done, “Tomorrowland” will be lucky to gross $200 million worldwide, and even if it does, Disney is looking at a massive write off. DVD and Bluray sales will help some. Those launches, though, come with their own promotional costs; and as the quality of movies have diminished into products no one wants to see twice, home video is a dying market.

“J0hn Carter,” the biggest flop of 2012, did better than “Tomorrowland.” Disney’s sci-fi adventure cost about $300 million and earned close to that ($284 million) worldwide.
When you compare total budget to total gross, The Wachowski’s twin disasters — “Jupiter Ascending” (2015) and “Speed Racer” (2008) — are on par with “Tomorrowland.” The same is true for 2011’s “Cowboys and Aliens” and 2010’s “The Wolfman.”
“Tomorrowland” is a dull movie; a left-wing movie predicated on the lie that Global Warming is not a massive left-wing hoax. “Tomorrowland” isn’t entertainment, it is pure propaganda — a lecture spewed by those posing as Our Betters. Moreover, it stars George Clooney, a movie actor, not a movie star.
People don’t go to the movies to be preached to, lied to, or made to feel guilty by hypocritical millionaire liars like Bird and Clooney who, in the creation of this box office bomb, devoured more resources and spewed more carbon than you or I could in a hundred lifetimes.
Will Hollywood ever learn?
Hollywood has too much money. Instead of being the standalone operations they once were (and therefore more accountable to the customers), the studios are all part of massive multinationals, where a $250 million write-off doesn’t mean all that much.
