A statistical analysis of Reddit has revealed that nearly 80% of threads with over 1,000 comments on the site end up containing the word “Hitler.”

The analysis, undertaken by statistician “CuriousGnu,” utilized a database of Reddit threads covering over 4.6 million comments.

He originally searched for the words “Hitler” and “Nazi” and found that once the number of comments hits 100, there’s roughly a 15% chance of the German dictator’s name cropping up. Yet once the comment count reaches 1,000, the probability of Hitler’s name cropping up increases to 78%.

“78% of Reddit Threads With 1,000+ Comments Mention Nazis,” Gnu claims.

Gnu admits his findings aren’t necessarily proof of Godwin’s law, as his database fails to consider the context in which comparisons to Hitler are made.

Godwin’s law is the idea that the longer an online discussion goes on, the greater the likelihood of users comparing someone or something to Nazism or Hitler.
