NUEVO LAREDO, Tamaulipas — Violent clashes in this border city have led to nine deaths–one of those was a soldier and the eight others were hit-men with Los Zetas drug cartel. The shootouts took place not far from the Rio Grande and the Texas city of Laredo.

The most recent shootout took place on Monday morning when a convoy of Mexican soldiers was patrolling along Cesar Lopez Avenue and when they arrived at the intersection of Paseo Colon Boulevard they spotted a Chevrolet Suburban without license plates, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Tamaulipas government revealed.

When the gunmen spotted the soldiers they began firing at the convoy setting off a fierce shootout as the soldiers fought off the attack. Once the shootout was over, two of the Zetas ended up sprawled on the floor while the third gunman died inside the SUV.

Monday’s shootout comes less that 48 hours after a weekend firefight that killed five Zetas and one Mexican soldier, Breitbart Texas previously reported. In that shootout, the Mexican Army has set up an operation to rescue a kidnapped woman and was able to track down and block off a group of heavily armed Zetas that were riding in an SUV.  The Zetas tried to escape and crashed into three vehicles before firing at the soldiers and setting off the firefight.

The Mexican soldiers fought off that attack killing the five gunmen and rescuing the woman. One of the soldiers was fatally wounded.

As reported in the past by Breitbart Texas, Los Zetas in Nuevo Laredo are believed to be responsible for shooting down a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter that was aiding a drug interdiction operation on the Texas side of the border.
