Mexican health officials announced a total of 82 confirmed cases of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) late Monday. The most recent figure comes one day after the announcement of 53 cases—the largest single-day jump to date.

During a streamed news conference, officials revealed they are analyzing 171 suspicious cases and were able to clear 579 more.

The tallies from Mexico’s Health Secretariat show a sharp rise that began over the weekend as totals rose from 26 on Friday, to 41 Saturday, 53 on Sunday, and most recently 82 on Monday night. Officials do not doubt the numbers will climb.

The new cases come on the same day that the border state of Tamaulipas announced its first confirmed patient. The subject is a 55-year-old man from Malaysia who is an employee of a multinational corporation with a presence in the Port of Tampico. The patient recently returned from a trip to Asia. He complained of throat pain and was placed in isolation until tests yielded a positive result.
