Report: Tax Credits for Illegal Immigrants Could Cost ‘Billions’

Jessica Vaughan, Director of Policy Studies for the Center for Immigration Studies, reported that giving tax credits to illegal immigrants could “potentially” cost “billions of dollars” on Wednesday’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto” on the Fox News Channel.

“This really shows that this idea that amnesties are a boon to the economy because now people will come out of the shadow[s] so they can pay taxes is really nonsense, because what the Treasury has known for years is that most of the people who get– who qualify for these amnesties actually qualify for tax credits, not to pay taxes. So this is potentially going to cost the real taxpayers about billions of dollars for years worth of refunds in this way” she stated.

Earlier, Vaughan said that under the plan, “as many as 5 million people may be newly authorized to work, that they can go back and file tax returns that will enable them to get the earned income tax credit, which is potentially worth up to about $3,000 per family, even though they didn’t qualify for it before, even though they were working illegally before.” She added that the government “can’t really be sure” whether these illegal immigrants are actually owed the tax credits.
