Summer kicks off with The Amazing Spiderman 2, but can it equal Captain America?
As we kick off the summer frame, we have many questions. What will surprise? What will dominate frames? What will disappoint at the box office? Sensei White Lotus is ready to jump right in, and wishes everyone a great summer film-going season.
Let the box office debate begin.
Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:
1. The Amazing Spiderman 2 ($96 million)– Film has the best opening date to work with, but fan disappointment remains high with the first Amazing Spiderman installment. So far, critical reviews indicate this sequel is better arranged, but could still struggle to equal the strength of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s opening (95 million). The Captain had a lot more positive buzz to work with, so look for a similar pursuit, but don’t be surprised if this sequel falls short of the Captain.
2. The Other Woman ($11 million)– This one beat Sensei’s call easily last week, and will still grab the female and date crowds for at least another week. On a positive note, actress Cameron Diaz added yet another 20+ million opener to her box office resume.
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($9 million) – The Captain will continue to impress as it runs for the 240 million domestic mark. Can you believe this film is already near the 650 million mark worldwide? When the first Captain America was released, many stated Captain America‘s image would not sell overseas. How distant those concerns seem now.
4. Heaven Is for Real ($8.7 million)– This film and the Captain will link up again, posting similar strong weekends. With such a strong box office start, we now ask the question, can this film make it to the 100 million domestic mark? That is not out of the question with such strong word of mouth. Film will break the 61 million domestic this weekend, and studio executives will be watching its progress closely.
5. Rio 2 ($7 million)– This will break the 100 million domestic mark this weekend, but it is not going to equal the box office gross of the original Rio (143 million) in the long run. Still, tough to argue against a box office result like this.
