The MPAA has given the upcoming film Fifty Shades of Grey, which is based on the best-selling erotica novel by British author E.L. James, an R rating because of its racy love scenes, sexy stars, and “unusual behavior.”
The graphic nudity, as well as its strong sexual content and dialogue, are among the reasons why the association has deemed the film worthy of the rating, but this is also why the book has built such a loyal fan base.
More than 100 million copies of the book have been sold worldwide, which was a milestone for a trilogy that started as fan fiction and quickly became one of the biggest-selling series in publishing history, according to The New York Times.
Some women reportedly love the book because it shows a man, Christian Grey, who knows his way around the bedroom. His lover, Ana, doesn’t have to ask him to do anything. He just knows.
“It’s all about being served,” said a fan during a forum on SiriusXM’s Book Radio channel.
Movie co-star Jamie Dornan, alongside Dakota Johnson, told GQ magazine that to prepare for the role of Christian Grey, he ventured out to sex dungeons and researched bondage and BDSM.
“If people are into that they’re into that,” he said via Variety. “By the way, if people make such a hoo-hah about the violence against women aspect of it, it’s far more common for men to be the submissive.” He continued, “And it’s consensual! There’s weirder sh– than that. I think plane spotting is far weirder than S&M. That I really don’t get. I can understand why people are into S&M, but standing outside Heathrow Terminal 5 waiting for Ryanair to come in?”
The bare-all film is set for theatrical release on Feb. 13, 2015.
