Australian-born female rapper Iggy Azalea was scheduled to perform at a Pittsburgh, PA LGBT Pride event this weekend, but canceled Monday after she was accused of making past homophobic statements on social media.
The 25-year-old “Fancy” rapper made the announcement on Twitter, the very platform that landed her in trouble in the first place, after facing criticism from the LGBT community for old posts that are now being called racist and homophobic.
“When guys whisper in eachothers ear I always think its kinda homo,” she wrote on Twitter October 16, 2010.
Earlier the same year, she posted: “Owwww studio. Me chief. You indian. I speak… You listen.”
The tweets were posted long before her breakthrough success, which makes Iggy the latest celebrity to learn that words posted on social media never go away.
Pittsburgh City Council president Bruce Kraus, the city’s first openly gay elected official, and several groups canceled their appearances at the Pride event in protest over her scheduled Saturday appearance, according to the Post-Gazette.
“Our board voted last week to not march in the Pittsburgh Pride parade, due to the insensitive choice of Iggy Azalea as headliner,” Vanessa Davis told the paper.
Davis heads the Pittsburgh chapter of the youth-advocacy group Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.
