Passers-by at Malibu’s Paradise Cove discovered a hand grenade on the popular beach shortly after 1 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and deputies from the Arson/Explosives Detail (AED) arrived on the scene shortly after the discovery was reported and rendered the device safe, according to press release issued by the LASD. The beach was reportedly re-opened to patrons once it was discovered that no additional explosive devices were found in the area.

“Obviously it was safe enough to take away,” Sgt. Wright of the LASD told local CBS News affiliate KCAL-9.

Although the type of grenade has not been identified and its origins are unknown,  it bears some semblance to the M67 grenade which is primarily used by the United States and Canada. The grenade was used during the Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.
