Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) has vowed to put the Obama administration and fellow legislators under pressure to take action to free Dr. Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who assisted the U.S. in the hunt for Osama bin Laden and who is now serving a 33-year prison sentence.
On Thursday, April 25, Dr. Afridi will begin his appeal anew, which may present a window of opportunity for the Obama administration to intercede.
In a letter sent Monday to Robert and Kira Lorsch, the philanthropists who have launched a “Free Afridi” effort at www.freeafridi.com, Rohrabacher pledged: “We must not abandon the hero who helped bring to justice, Osama bin Laden, the murderer of 3000 innocent Americans on 9/11.”
Rohrabacher added: “In the next two weeks, efforts will be made behind the scenes and in public view to pressure decision makers in the Executive and Legislative branches to do what’s right in order [to] save Dr. Afridi.”
Recently, Rohrabacher also introduced a bipartisan resolution, H. Res. 86, in support of Dr. Afridi.
Breitbart News published an interview Monday with relative of Dr. Afridi, who appealed to the Obama administration and the American people to help Dr. Afridi and his family, who live in fear of Taliban reprisals.
