SC Dem: Colbert-Busch 'Too Beholden to Political Left'

On Thursday, SC Democrat Ben Frasier, a former congressional candidate, endorsed Mark Sanford in his campaign for Congress against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert-Busch. Fraiser lost the Democrat primary race to Colbert-Busch in March. Frasier said she is too liberal for the district.

“I am a Democrat, but a conservative one, and I am supporting Mark because I don’t think Elizabeth represents the conservative values of this district,” Frasier said. “I know Mark to be a man of integrity who will represent the District well. I am crossing party lines to make this endorsement because with all due respect to Elizabeth she is just too beholden to the political left to represent the Lowcountry effectively.”

The special election for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District is set for May 7th. The district has a strong Republican lean. Mitt Romney won the district by 18 points in 2012. Colbert-Busch, however, is the sister of comedian Steven Colbert and will likely attract considerable financial backing and enormous earned media coverage.

A contest of personalities could make the election close. If, however, the contest is about a contrast on issues and policies, Sanford, whose views are much more in line with district voters, would have a clear advantage. Frasier’s endorsement on Thursday is about the contrast of ideas over how best to fix our nation’s economic and fiscal challenges.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to receive an unusual amount of support from the environmental and conservation communities, as well as conservative Democrats,” Sanford said. “To that end, I’m pleased to receive Ben’s support, and think it will prove to be indicative of the support we’ll be getting from a wide range of people across the district who are concerned with wallet and pocketbook issues, and a whole host of issues talked about around the dinner table by Lowcountry families.”
