Cruz to Speak at Iowa Social Conservative Summit

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) will head to Iowa in August to speak to religious conservatives at the Family Leadership Summit.

The event, which will take place in Ames, Iowa on Saturday Aug. 10. It is co-sponsored by The Family Leader, a social conservative group that is extremely influential in the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating caucuses, along with Citizens United, Heritage Action, and the National Organization for Marriage.

The Family Leader announced Cruz’s father, Rafael, who is a pastor, will be speaking as well.

“The work of the Family Leadership Summit to fight for conservative values and promote strong families is making a positive impact across our country,” Cruz said. “My dad and I are honored to be included in this year’s summit and are looking forward to it.”

Bob Vander Plaats, the president & CEO of The Family Leader, said he was “thrilled Senator Ted Cruz and his father, Pastor Rafael Cruz, are pairing up together to join the speaker line up for The Family Leadership Summit.”

“Senator Cruz’s bold and principled leadership is a welcome change in our current political climate,” he added. “And Pastor Cruz’s bold courage to flee Cuba to come to America thoroughly embodies the spirit of the American Dream. Iowans are in for a real treat to be able to hear this pair of American heroes.”

Other speakers will include Rick Santorum and Donald Trump. The group has invited Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). Cruz, who recently keynoted South Carolina Republican Party’s Silver Elephant Dinner, will draw speculation about his 2016 plans with what will be his second trip to Iowa in as many months.
