1st Anniversary of Gosnell Murder Conviction: Where Are We Now?

On May 13, 2013, Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell was found guilty on three first-degree murder charges in the deaths of babies born alive during abortion procedures, then killed with scissors in a filthy clinic that became known as the “house of horrors.”

However, while individual states have made significant progress in restricting late-term abortions and requiring abortion clinics to maintain the same health and safety standards as other medical facilities, wealthy liberal financiers, like Warren Buffet, continue to ensure abortions are provided when demanded. In addition, the pro-life community continues to fight to have a bill heard in the United States Senate that would ban abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy.

As FoxNews.com reports, billionaire Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has legally donated over $1.2 billion to abortion organizations between 2001 and 2012, an amount equal to about 2.7 million first-trimester abortions and more than twice the number of abortions that take place in the United States within an entire year.

Buffett’s own charity, The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, is named after the billionaire’s first wife who was an avid abortion supporter. Tracy Weitz, Ph.D., MPA, who runs the Buffet organization’s domestic operation, has also worked for Planned Parenthood and The Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health.

As the Chicago Tribune reported, in his 1995 biography of Buffett, Roger Lowenstein related that Buffett, the so-called “Oracle of Omaha,” has merged his view of philanthropy with investment, seeking several “high-leverage” causes that could bring home the “biggest social bang for the buck.” Consequently, the billionaire’s interest in population control reflects a “Malthusian dread that overpopulation would aggravate problems in all other areas – such as food, housing, even human survival.”

Buffett is joined in his philanthropy to the abortion industry by Melinda Gates of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, who has partnered globally with Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the United Nations Population Fund, the latter of which has helped to administer, among other programs, China’s coercive “one child policy.”

Buffett’s substantial contributions to the abortion industry are highlighted just as a new study is released from researchers at the University of North Carolina that found induced abortions account for more years of potential life lost than all other causes of death combined. In addition, the study found that the black abortion rate and rate of years of life lost to abortion are more than three times those of whites.

Writing at FoxNews.com, Dan Gainor places the facts about Buffett’s immense contributions to the abortion industry, and scandal-ridden Planned Parenthood in particular, in perspective, even as journalists continually seek the billionaire out as a source for commentary:

No mention of Buffett’s billions then either.

Instead we get grandfatherly Buffett, tax-hiking Buffett, investor Buffett. As a reliable liberal businessman, journalists turn to him as a source for almost any commentary.

It’s easy to understand. If you give $1,000 to a ballot initiative to defend traditional marriage, that’s controversial. If you give $1.25 billion to promote abortion, journalists, who are wildly pro-abortion, don’t dare see any controversy.

But now the information is out there. Watch as the supposedly “neutral” news media does its best to hide it.

The news of Buffett’s contributions to providing abortions on demand also comes as the Senate is being asked to vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would ban abortions past 20 weeks of pregnancy. Members of the national pro-life community are calling upon Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) to permit a vote on the bill.

Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, said in a press release Tuesday:

Today we also join the voices of many in the US Senate and across America in calling for a Senate vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This legislation, which would protect children in the womb from 20 weeks forward, is the next key step in reaching our ultimate goal, which is the protection of every unborn child — all of whom, without exception, we acknowledge as persons. Even among those who do not share that ultimate goal or belief, most agree that a policy allowing abortion after 20 weeks – when these children feel pain – is too extreme.

Along with working for the passage of this legislation, Priests for Life is also implementing a project whereby each member of the US Senate will be asked publicly whether he or she believes that the lives of children after 20 weeks of development should be protected in the womb. Priests for Life will see to it not only that this question is asked, but that the response – or lack thereof – is widely publicized in the state that Senator represents, and across the country. Like it or not, the painful dismemberment of children in the womb is going to be a key issue in this year’s midterm elections.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, told Breitbart News, “A federal law is long overdue. The United States is only one of seven countries to allow abortion on demand at such a late stage of pregnancy.”

Referencing the anniversary of the Gosnell murder conviction, Dannenfelser added, “On this of all days, we call on the U.S. Senate to vote on this legislation and make certain children capable of feeling intense pain, as well as their mothers, are protected from abortion at such a very late stage of gestation.”

“A year ago today, a jury in Philadelphia convicted one of our nation’s most horrific serial killers, Kermit Gosnell,” Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, told Breitbart News. “They found him guilty of killing a desperate young mother and three of the thousands of babies he murdered over his 40-plus year career.”

“While many in the media tried to ignore Gosnell’s abhorrent crimes, the nation learned just how filthy and disgusting his practice of ‘reproductive freedom’ really was,” Hawkins added. “They learned that just because abortion is legal, doesn’t make it safe.”

Hawkins continued:

While Planned Parenthood and late-term abortion activists like Wendy Davis tried to quickly change the narrative, truth prevailed. The U.S. House of Representatives and states across the nation passed bills to ban abortions after 20 weeks, when babies have been scientifically proven to feel pain. Sadly, our U.S. Senate has failed to even call a vote for this historic human rights bill. Scared of deep pockets of those who advocate abortion even in the most in-humane and extreme circumstances, the Senate has remained silent.

Make no mistake about it, there are more Kermit Gosnells out there, preying on the desperation of women and relying on the powerful lobbying forces of Planned Parenthood to fight any common-sense safety standards so they can remain the shadows, making their millions.

“The tide has turned, however,” Hawkins said. “The majority of America is now solidly pro-life. It is time to end the barbarism.”

Similarly, Ryan Bomberger, founder of the Radiance Foundation, emphasized to Breitbart News the lengths pro-abortion activists will go to prevent health and safety standards in abortion clinics, all the while they argue that abortion is “women’s health care.”

“Pro-abortion groups daily prove how far they will go to defend the back-alley,” Bomberger said. “Abortion activists have fought against every single legislative measure to protect women and children from butchers like Gosnell.”

“In fact last week liberal New York politicians just tried (but failed) to advance the radical ‘Reproductive Health Act’ which eliminates all abortion clinic regulations, decriminalizes abortion through entire pregnancy and shields abortionists from criminal prosecution,” he added.
